The best UK SIM for international students: what to look for

Most UK networks were built for people with a UK address, a UK bank account and a credit history. As a new international student you usually have none of those yet. Here is what actually matters when you pick a SIM, and what to avoid.

1. No credit check, no UK address

Pay-monthly contracts normally need a credit check, and a credit check needs a UK credit history. Many students get turned down in their first week for that reason alone.

Prepaid plans and SIM-only plans paid a month at a time usually skip the credit check. Look for a plan that only asks for your name, an email address and a card that works in the UK, including most cards from home and Apple Pay or Google Pay.

2. No long contract

Courses end, plans change and you may go home for the summer. A 12 or 24-month contract can keep charging you after you leave the country. A rolling monthly plan you can cancel online is the safer choice, ideally with no exit fee.

3. An eSIM, so you can sort it before you fly

An eSIM is a SIM that downloads to your phone instead of arriving in the post. You can buy it from home, install it on any Wi-Fi, and have a UK number working when you land, with no shop to find and no queue at the airport.

Your phone needs to support eSIM and be unlocked. Dial *#06#: if you see an EID, it supports eSIM. Phones bought on a contract back home are often locked to that network, so check with them before you travel.

4. Keep your home number at the same time

Your bank at home will keep sending security codes to your home number, and your family will keep calling it. Most eSIM phones hold two lines at once: leave your home SIM in, add a UK eSIM, and choose which one uses data. WhatsApp stays on the number it is already on.

5. The right amount of data

If you have Wi-Fi in your halls and on campus, you may need less mobile data than you think. Maps, messaging and social media on the go fit in a small allowance. Streaming video, hotspotting a laptop or living without home Wi-Fi needs a lot more.

Pick a plan you can change month to month, so you can start small and move up (or down) once you know how you use it.

6. Roaming for trips in Europe

Weekend trips and holidays in Europe are part of student life in the UK. Since Brexit, some UK networks charge for using your plan in the EU. Check whether roaming is included, how much data you can use abroad, and what happens outside the included countries.

What to watch out for

Before you pay, check for:

  • a credit check or proof of UK address at the end of checkout
  • a minimum term longer than one month, or an exit fee
  • a price that rises after a few months
  • roaming charges in Europe
  • a physical SIM that has to be posted to an address you don't have yet

Questions

Can international students get a UK SIM without a bank account?
Yes. Prepaid and SIM-only plans paid a month at a time usually only need a card that works in the UK, which includes most cards from home. GetOnIt also takes Apple Pay and Google Pay, with no credit check.
Should I get a contract or a SIM-only plan as a student?
For most international students, a monthly SIM-only or prepaid plan is the better choice: no credit check, nothing to pay off when you leave, and you can change or cancel it as your plans change.
Can I buy a UK SIM before I arrive?
With an eSIM, yes. It arrives by email, you install it on any Wi-Fi, and your UK number can be working before you board or as soon as you land.

A UK number in about 15 minutes.

Prepaid eSIM plans from £9 a month. No contract, no credit check, no UK address needed.
